The Home Grower's
Complete Guide.

From seed to a proper 90-day cure. The knowledge the corporate cannabis industry doesn't want you to have.

STEP 01 — SEED SELECTION

Start With Genetics Worth Growing

Everything starts here. A seed is the entire genetic blueprint of your plant — the ceiling of what's possible. A mediocre seed produces mediocre results no matter how skilled the grower. Spend time selecting quality genetics from reputable breeders.

A healthy, viable seed is dark (tan to dark brown), firm when squeezed gently, and has a waxy, slightly glossy surface. Pale green, white, or soft seeds are immature and unlikely to germinate successfully.

Store seeds properly — sealed in a small airtight container with a silica gel pack, kept in a cool dark place (a refrigerator drawer works well). Properly stored seeds maintain viability for 2-5 years.

PRO TIP

Order your genetics now, before November 12, 2026. Support the breeders in our directory. This law is specifically designed to cut off your access to mail-order seeds.

STEP 02 — GERMINATION

Waking the Seed Up

The paper towel method is reliable and lets you monitor the process. Place seeds between two layers of damp (not soaked) paper towels on a plate. Cover with another plate to retain moisture and place in a warm location — 70-85°F is ideal.

Check daily. Most viable seeds will show a taproot within 24-72 hours. Some can take up to 5 days. Once the taproot is 0.5-1 inch long, it's time to plant — handle carefully, never touch the taproot directly.

Plant taproot-down, about half an inch deep in lightly moistened seedling mix. Cover loosely. Germination is complete when the first set of seed leaves (cotyledons) emerges above soil — usually within 24-48 hours of planting.

STEP 03 — VEGETATIVE GROWTH

Building the Structure

The vegetative stage is when your plant builds the architecture that determines your final yield. Give it 18 hours of light and 6 hours of dark. Feed nitrogen-rich nutrients as the plant establishes itself — start light and increase gradually.

Training your plant during this stage dramatically increases yield. Low-stress training (LST) involves gently bending and tying branches to create a flat, even canopy. Topping — cutting the main stem — creates two main colas instead of one. These techniques are the difference between average and exceptional harvests.

PRO TIP

Don't rush the veg stage. A plant that vegs for 6-8 weeks builds a root system and canopy capable of supporting a significantly larger harvest than one flipped to flower at 3 weeks.

STEP 04 — FLOWERING

When the Magic Happens

Switch to a 12-hours-on, 12-hours-off light cycle to trigger flowering. Shift your nutrients toward phosphorus and potassium — these fuel flower development, not leaf growth. Reduce nitrogen significantly once flowering is underway.

Most strains flower for 8-12 weeks. The best way to know when to harvest is to examine the trichomes under magnification. A jeweler's loupe (30-60x) or a digital microscope works well. Clear trichomes = early, not ready. Cloudy/milky trichomes = peak THC, more cerebral effect. Amber trichomes = THC degrading to CBN, more sedative effect.

Most experienced growers harvest at 70-80% cloudy, 20-30% amber for a balanced effect. This is personal preference — experiment and find your ideal window.

STEP 05 — HARVEST & DRY

The 10-Day Dry

Here's where most home growers — and virtually all commercial operations — cut corners. A proper dry takes 10-14 days minimum. Not 5 days. Not 7. Ten days, ideally in a dark space at 60-65°F and 55-65% relative humidity with gentle air circulation.

Hang whole branches or individual buds on lines or racks. Slow drying preserves terpenes (the compounds responsible for flavor and aroma) that rapid drying destroys. The buds are ready to cure when the small stems snap rather than bend — outer buds feel dry but the interior still has moisture.

Cut dispensary weed? Dried in 3-5 days in a commercial drying room at elevated temperatures to maximize throughput. The terpene profile is a shadow of what it should be before you ever buy it.

PRO TIP

Slow is everything in the dry. A controlled environment with a small fan (not pointing directly at buds) circulating air is ideal. Buy a cheap hygrometer to monitor humidity.

STEP 06 — THE 90-DAY CURE

This Is What You're Missing

This is the step that separates good weed from the best weed you've ever smoked. Curing is an enzymatic and chemical process — chlorophyll breaks down, harsh compounds convert, and terpenes develop their full complexity. It cannot be rushed.

Place dried buds in wide-mouth mason jars, filling about 75% full. Store in a cool, dark location. For the first two weeks, open jars twice daily for 10-15 minutes — this is called "burping." Release built-up moisture and gas. If buds smell like ammonia, they're too wet — leave lids off for a few hours.

After two weeks, burp once daily for another two weeks. Then once a week. After 30 days, the smoke is noticeably smoother. After 60 days, the flavor profile opens up. At 90 days, you understand what cannabis is actually supposed to taste and feel like.

No dispensary in the country cures for 90 days. The economics don't allow it. Home growers have access to something commercial operations simply cannot provide. That's the secret they don't want you to figure out.

PRO TIP

Boveda 62% humidity packs in your cure jars help maintain the ideal moisture level and extend shelf life. The difference between 60-day and 90-day cured flower is not subtle. Be patient.

BONUS — HASH MAKING

Ancient Knowledge. Still the Best.

Hash is the concentrated essence of the cannabis plant — trichomes separated from plant material and pressed together. It has been made, traded, and consumed across cultures for thousands of years. This knowledge belongs to everyone.

Ice water extraction (bubble hash) is the cleanest method for home producers. Combine dried trim or whole buds with ice water, agitate, and filter through progressively finer mesh bags. The trichomes sink and collect on the finest screens. Press and dry for a full-melt experience unlike anything commercially available.

Dry sift over fine screens is simpler. Rosin pressing — applying heat and pressure to dried flower or bubble hash — requires no solvents and produces a clean, potent concentrate with the full terpene profile intact.
